It was launched on March 29 the fourth FREMM frigate ordered by the Italian Navy. The ship, named Carabiniere, will be in ASW configuration (Anti Submarine Warfare), meaning it has silent navigation capabilities in significant anti-submarine hunting speed.

The French-Italian program of the European Multi-Mission Frigates FREMM, which sees Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (51% Fincantieri, 49% Selex ES) as the prime contractor for Italy, features the construction of ten units, of which eight have already been funded to date.

The FREMM project is a cooperation between the Italian and French defense industries, already experienced with the implementation of the Horizon Class. The frigates are built in three versions: Anti Submarine Warfare role (ASW), multi-role (General Purpose - GP) for ground attack and bombing in support of landing forces, as well as Anti-Aircraft role (FREDA) for the Marine Nationale. Finmeccanica plays an important role within this program as it's able to provide fully integrated solutions and capabilites thanks to the competences of its controlled companies Selex ES, MBDA, WASS, OTO Melara and AgustaWestland.
