Leonardo has a key coordination and participation role in several civilian and dual R&D projects, in line with its industrial mission. In particular, it is involved in the Technological Districts, which are promoted in the PNR (the National Research Programme led by MIUR, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research) and have the scope of creating a sectorial network of companies and academic institutions, in order to develop technological capabilities for production processes.
For the Aerospace sector, Leonardo is a founding member of the CTNA (Italian Cluster for Aerospace Technology), the Italian Cluster including the main technological Aerospace districts.
In order to develop a national research agenda and promote key projects for the competitiveness of the relevant sectors, Leonardo supports and manages three National Technology Platforms also in connection with the related European Platforms:
- ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe) Italy, which aims to coordinate Research & Development activities in the aeronautics sector;
- SPIN-IT (Space Innovation in Italy), created to promote innovation and strengthen Italy's presence in European and international applied research programmes in the space sector;
- SERIT (SEcurity Research in ITaly), which has the objective to exploit technological synergies among industries, universities and research centres and foster dialogue among the main stakeholders in the security sector.
