Our technologies & projects

Leonardo works across a diverse range of technological areas to innovate and build on the company’s technological heritage. This strengthens future capabilities and ensures that the benefits are felt across all the sectors in which we operate.

Activities span 14 technological areas, involving around 400 technologies. These are the building blocks for Leonardo’s product development roadmaps.

Some technologies have been part of Leonardo's DNA for several decades and experts in the various business domains work to refresh them and integrate them into the product range.

Others are born from the innovation ecosystem and feed into the technological portfolio. Some solutions, which are assessed as game changers, are worked on by Leonardo Labs, the company’s incubators of future technologies and know-how.

Transforming different technologies into state-of-the-art products or services is complex. Whether it focuses on a single component or a larger system, the project involves the entire development chain.

Leonardo is a partner in international projects and collaborations across both civil and military fields (e.g. Horizon 2020, EDA, ESA, MIUR, PNRM, etc.).

Topics include:

  • Air and maritime surveillance
  • Space technologies
  • Combating climate change
  • Technologies to make production processes more efficient and sustainable (Industry 4.0)
  • A new generation of more efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft
  • Enabling methodologies for innovative 'green' aerostructures
  • Future-generation Air Traffic Management infrastructure
  • Geoinformation applied to ground monitoring to improve the resilience of infrastructure, territories and communities.

Through Leonardo’s Sustainability Plan, which is linked to national and international projects and research programmes, the company aims to develop innovative solutions to support the objectives of the UN 2030 Agenda, in line with the guidelines of the European Green Deal.

This covers the entire value chain, from the efficiency of activities and production processes to the development of products and services with a lower environmental impact, as well as technologies to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Technological Programmes

The complexity of our programmes require funding from multiple sources and collaboration with partners and accademia. As we shape the products of the future, we  develop products in house and participate to several international programmes.
