- The contract, worth around 30 million Euros to Leonardo, is part of a wider agreement between Italy and the Republic of Congo to develop a multi-modal transport system

Leonardo-Finmeccanica, as the leader of the Italian Alliance for Ports (IA4P), a group of companies active in port logistics and infrastructure, has been contracted to provide an integrated system for maritime security for the port of Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. The contract, which is worth a total of over 150 million Euros - around 30 million of which will go to Leonardo - was signed today in Milan by Jean J. Bouya, the Congolese Ministre de l’Amenagement du Territoire et des Grands Travaux, alongside the Italian Minister of Economic Development, Carlo Calenda.
Leonardo will provide systems for both maritime and land-based security which will employ radar and electro-optical sensors, communications systems, logistics management and port operations systems. The agreement also includes civil work including the construction of new docks for a total length of 700m as well as further engineering and design work and the project management of the other companies involved in the port development plan.
The contract is part of an intergovernmental agreement between Italy and the Republic of Congo which involves the development of a ‘multi-modal’ integrated transport system in the Congo basin covering river, sea and rail transport. Leonardo, along with Italian State railway company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, was the main proponent and industrial architect of the project.
A second phase of the project will extend the maritime surveillance at Pointe Noire to cover the Republic of Congo’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) via an integrated system that will include radar sensors and a secure telecommunications network.
