Revolutionise and modernise avionic repair infrastructure

The CARES (Centre for Avionics REpair and Software development) facility is designed and developed by Leonardo and was formally commissioned in 2001. The facility operates as a Depot deep level repair station and is fully equipped to enable repairs to be completed to LRU/Module/SRI levels (3rd/4th line). Viewed as the ‘benchmark’ repair facility within the Indian Navy support directorate, the facility can be applied to current and future aircraft platforms. The CARES team was recently awarded in February 2012 a major upgrade program to the CARES facility from the Indian Ministry of Defence, valued at €25M. The contract includes knowledge transfer packages that will train Indian Navy personnel for activities related to avionics repair techniques (Including deep level) and test equipment technologies. Overall, CARES will build lasting partnerships in India as part of Leonardo long term strategy in the country.

Emphasis on the knowledge transfer aspects and open architecture enables the Indian Navy to not just repair Sea Harrier and Sea King equipment but also provide the capability to independently design repair solutions for any Avionic / Electrical equipment for any platform.

Main features
  • Create an Avionic Centre of Excellence for deep level repair and design/development of repair capability
  • Autonomous capability to design, develop and maintain a test capability for the purpose of repairing a wide range of avionic/electrical equipment fitted to the various Indian Navy platforms (Fixed Wing / Rotary Wing / Naval)
  • The capability to perform repairs to component level
  • Gain knowledge, experience and competence in the design and development of test program sets that are transferrable to other industries (Military and Commercial)
  • Reduce repair costs and timescales to improve the availability of serviceable avionics
  • Minimise the numerous special to type repair capability, jigs and supporting documents and training that were bespoke for each system.
