Eye in the Skies

The state-of-the-art unmanned AWHERO is a dual-use platform able to perform civil and military missions day and night, over land and sea. It is the only RUAS (Rotary Unmanned Air System) in its class that has been designed to the same safety design concepts applied to helicopters such as systems redundancy and guarantees high reliability and maintainability, ensuring low operating costs.

AWHERO is controlled through a Ground Control Station (GCS), with protocols and communication NATO STANAG-4586 compliant, able to manage multiple missions during all stages of flight, with combined or independent assets. The GCS enables mission planning/re-planning, mission management and control of sensor payloads. Data, images and video can be immediately transmitted to the GCS and to final user terminals for decision support.

Two modular payload bays carry sensors including radar (such as the Gabbiano TS Ultra-Light), Electro Optical (EO) / Infra-red (IR) and Light Imaging Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and advanced communication systems. The payloads can be nose, underbelly or side-mounted. The nose bay can accommodate a 10” EO/IR turret or an 8” EO/IR turret with radar, while the underbelly and side bays can be used for heavier payloads.

AWHERO is the perfect low-cost/low maintenance solution for security and utility applications and has been designed to undertake a wide range of tactical battlefield and maritime missions. AWHERO can also be embarked and operated from a ship alongside a manned platform.

Main Features
  • Due to its modular architecture, AWHERO can be readily interfaced with existing end-user networks in order to provide: live streaming video; radar images; identified objects, ships, vehicles and persons; Automatic Identification System (AIS) information and tracking of vessels, and georeferenced objects.
  • AWHERO can perform a wide range of utility applications including disaster relief, environmental monitoring, firefighting and pipeline-powerline monitoring. It is also an ideal answer for security missions such as traffic enforcement, surveillance, patrol and aerial monitoring of sensitive targets.
  • AWHERO is capable to perform a wide spectrum of battlefield and maritime missions including: Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), force protection, combat support, route clearance, cargo re-supply, anti-piracy, maritime security operations and Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) communications relay for other unmanned systems.
  • AWHERO can be teamed with manned aircraft from a permanent shore base or forward deployed operating base. Teamed with AW159 and/or AW101 helicopters, AWHERO significantly enhances maritime operational effect and tactical reach during littoral and blue water operations.
