Responsible Canteens

In 2013, in partnership with Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus, Leonardo launched its Responsible Canteens Programme with the purpose of recovering the surplus food in its larger company canteens and donating it to the no-profit companies who work with Banco Alimentare operating in the municipalities near the company’s sites.

With this good practice, the food surpluses in question are turned into resources, the costs of waste disposal are reduced and a form of collaborative economy and a stable social engagement is established with the no-profit organisations present in the reference areas.

The Programme is also based on the active collaboration of those who manage the canteen services.


Every day, any food not consumed in the canteens is packed, refrigerated and stored, to then be delivered to the volunteers of Banco Alimentare and so reach the participating organisations within 24 hours. With 25 canteens involved, in 2016 approximately 200,000 portions of cooked food and another 11 tonnes of food were distributed to 200,000 people.

The value of these donations in kind, according to the parameters provided by Banco Alimentare, is approximately 400,000 euro per year. From 2013 to today, through the Programme, food worth a total of over 1,350,000 euro has been recovered.

The partenariat with Banco Alimentare has also enabled the company to organise its own food collection which, in 2016, thanks to the generosity of its employees, collected over 4 tonnes of food products and donated these to the no profit organisations already participating in the Responsible Canteen Programme.
