Day 5

Farnborough International Airshow – Day Five

During the fifth day of the Farnborough Airshow, the Leonardo-Finmeccanica Pavilion and static area were  visited by the UK Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon, who was welcomed by Norman Bone, Managing Director of the Airborne & Space Systems Division. Hon. Fallon was able to see the cutting-edge technology that Leonardo-Finmeccanica offers to its institutional customers in Britain and all over the world, contributing to the creation and development of important international projects, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Tornado, just to name a few.

The delegations that visited Leonardo-Finmeccanica’s exhibition area today included representatives from the Joint Aviation Command of the United Arab Emirates, which recently purchased three AW609 tiltrotors in SAR (Search and Rescue) configuration.

The fifth day of the Airshow focused in particular on the future generations of engineers, scientists and technicians: indeed, British students were the stars of the Farnborough Airshow, thanks to Futures Day, an initiative organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) and the Inspiring Futures association.

Futures Day gave groups from British schools, universities and youth associations (aged between 11 and 21 years) the opportunity to discover the career path possibilities of studying and specialising in the fields of engineering and aerospace. As a sponsor of Futures Day 2016, Leonardo-Finmeccanica welcomed to its Pavilion and static area numerous students who were able to admire and experience close-up the Company’s technologies, systems and capacities on display at the Airshow.

This year, the Futures Day initiative was enriched by the presence of Tim Peake, the British astronaut who was sent on an International Space Station mission for 185 days. Tim Peake, the first British citizen to be selected as an ESA astronaut, is a former test pilot for AgustaWestland (now Leonardo’s Helicopter Division).
