Leonardo is member of SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research), an ambitious programme launched by the European Commission, with the aim to improve Air Traffic Management (ATM) performance by modernising and harmonising ATM systems through the definition, development, validation and deployment of innovative technological and operational solutions, for the creation of the 'Single European Sky'.


SESAR JU is a Public-Private Partnership among the European Commission, EUROCONTROL and Industries, to develop the new generation of the European Air Traffic Management system that will enhance the performance of air transport.


SESAR 2020 will demonstrate the viability of the technological and operational solutions already developed within the SESAR in larger and more operationally-integrated environments.


Leonardo cooperates in  the ground segment with other industrial players, in particular on the System Wide Information Management (SWIM), ATC sensors, ground stations and weather systems.


Leonardo’s activities are mainly focussed on adding regional and military aircraft and RPAS (Remote Piloted Aircraft Systems) to the new Single European Sky.


Leonardo also contributes to the introduction of future helicopters, equipped with the most advanced technical and operational capability, and to the improvement of CNS (Communications, Navigation and Surveillance) capabilities, including those applied in the space domain.
