Horizon 2020, the European Union Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, is the key initiative for achieving the objectives defined in the Europe 2020 Strategy. It shows how the EU can create a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy, based on knowledge and innovation, delivering high levels of employment, productivity and social cohesion.
Leonardo actively participates in the programme in accordance with the technological priorities set out below:
The Aeronautical industry is a high technology industry segment that has a advanced capacity and intensity for innovation. The complexity of its high-tech products requires huge investment in Research and Development, with significant spin-off effects benefiting also other areas of EU economy.
Leonardo plays important leadership roles in major European aeronautics research programmes: Clean Sky/Clean Sky 2 and SESAR/ SESAR 2020, Joint Technology Initiatives (JTI) and SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research).
The Security market is highly fragmented, as there are no common standards or certifications among the European Member States. Horizon 2020 aims to facilitate European harmonization, promoting the development of innovative solutions designed to identify, prevent and manage the impact of crime and crisis, with particular emphasis on terroristic attacks.
Leonardo is a leading technological player in this field, specifically in the area of maritime border surveillance, in critical infrastructures protection and in cyber security.
Space contributes to economic growth, social well-being and sustainable development, through applications and services in security, disaster management, telecommunications, navigation and Earth observation. Horizon 2020 aims to strengthen the position of European industry and to support the development of enabling technologies in the fields mentioned above and in other specific areas (e.g. Public Regulated Services (PRS), Space Situation Awareness / Surveillance and Tracking (SSA / SST) as well as scientific missions and exploration.
Leonardo plays a key role in the activities promoted by the European Commission and particularly in the two major programmes Galileo and Copernicus.
Information and Communications Technology
The importance of information and communications technology (ICT) is recognised by the European Commission in the 'Digital Agenda for Europe'. Horizon 2020 includes actions for the strengthening of Trust and Security and pilot projects on Big Data and Data Analytics related to specific sectors, such as aeronautics.
Leonardo is a founding member of the JTI ECSEL (Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership), a public-private partnership involving the European Commission, Member States and Industry, which aims to develop innovative solutions in the field of electronic components and systems.
