Electronics is the foundation of Leonardo's product lines, particularly as far as sensors and communications go. The consolidated leadership in the fields of radar and infrared (IR) sensors is based both on its internal foundries, such as in the field of GaAs and GaN microwave integrated circuits, and on fabless approaches, as in the development of Silicon ROIC (Read Out Integrated Circuits) integrated with IR imaging sensor arrays, through flexible approaches that optimise product quality and innovation.
Leonardo is at the forefront in the different fields of electronics, as in the case of GaN (Gallium Nitride) MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits) developed in our Foundry for the new generation of multifunctional AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Antenna) radars in the various operating bands L, S, C and X, for sea, land, air and space applications.
Our expertise in the field of microelectronics integration is also contributing to the development of this new generation of radars, by means of solutions that combine greater electronic and thermal efficiency with close integration of the analogue domain of microwave front-ends and the digital domain of antenna back-ends, enabling the adoption of advanced architectural solutions such as ‘Digital Beamforming’. The frontier of computing platforms is also particularly important, featuring very high computational capacity developed for our most advanced signal processing and avionics systems.
