Autonomous Systems

Leonardo develops technologies for the evolution of its systems aimed at minimising human intervention in their operations along a clearly defined roadmap. This pathway starts from purely automated solutions, which react to stimuli set in a predetermined and therefore predictable manner, and ends up with autonomous systems that adapt their actions to the mutable characteristics of the operating environment. This is achieved through a process of continuous machine learning, thereby gradually reducing the need for direct human intervention.

Along this line of evolution, Leonardo is developing systems and platforms in various areas from underwater to space (satellites and robotics for extra-planetary missions), land, and air (mini and tactical MALE UAV, UCAV and RUAV).

The future predicts a world of machines whose autonomy will depend on increasingly sophisticated sensors designed to guarantee increasingly accurate awareness of the surrounding environment, along with the need for even more powerful computing platforms to meet growing computing requirements in support of cognitive and decision-making processes and safe and broadband connection solutions to ensure safe data transfer continuity to and from platforms through Cyber Security solutions. Leonardo invests in all these technological assets to make certain its systems remain highly competitive in a world where users will be increasingly be expected to perform functions of coordination and supervision without being directly and continuously involved in operational situations.
