Mauro Moretti was appointed Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Leonardo S.p.a. on 15 May 2014.

In January 2015, Mr. Moretti launched the new Industrial Plan for the restructuring of the Group, culminating in January 2016 with the creation of “One Company”, carried out through merger operations for the incorporation of OTO Melara and WASS into Leonardo and the absorption of the activities carried out by AgustaWestland, Alenia Aermacchi and Selex ES. Under Moretti’s guidance, the company’s rebranding was conceived and achieved, changing its name from Finmeccanica to Leonardo.

Mr. Moretti holds a number of positions: President of the AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) since March 2015; Co-Chairman of the Italy-Japan Business Group since September 2015; Honorary Chairman of AIAD (the Italian Industries Federation for Aerospace, Defence and Security) since July 2014; and President of the Italian FS Foundation since 2013.

He holds prestigious awards including: the Italian Order of Merit for Labour (2010) and an Honorary Degree in Mechanical Engineering, University of Cassino (2005).

Mr. Moretti began his career in 1978, after winning a public competition for a managerial role, at Ferrovie dello Stato S.p.a. (the Italian State Railways Company). There he held numerous roles in a variety of different sectors, including Managing Director of the Technological Development Division (1993); CEO of Metropolis S.p.a., the FS real estate company (1994); Director of the “Rolling Stock and Locomotion” strategy business sector (1996); Director of the Network Rail strategic business sector (1997), becoming Chief Executive Officer of RFI – Rete Ferroviaria Italiana S.p.a. (2001). In 2006, he was appointed CEO of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane S.p.a. (the Italian State Railways Group).

During his eight year leadership (2006-2014), Mr. Moretti turned around Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and in 2008 achieved the first consolidated profit in the Group’s history, an achievement confirmed in the five years that followed; in 2009 he brought the ambitious Italian High Speed Rail project to completion and launched Frecciarossa, which became one of the best known and successful “Made in Italy” brands, and began the development program for the construction of the new generation railway stations, designed by prestigious architects, including the Turin Porta Susa and Rome Tiburtina stations. He was also Chairman of Italferr S.p.a. (2007-2010) and of Grandi Stazioni S.p.a. (2008-May 2014).

Mr. Moretti currently holds many positions including member of the General Council of Confindustria, member of the Confindustria European Technical Group (since October 2006 and May 2012 respectively), member of the General Council of Unindustria of Rome and Lazio (since May 2015), Chairman of the Fondazione Ricerca & Imprenditorialità (since February 2015) and member of Comitato Leonardo’s Executive Board (since March 2016).

Previously, Mr. Moretti was an elective member of Confindustria’s Board of Directors (2012-2014), Vice-President of Unindustria (2011-2012), Vice-President of the Industrial Union of Naples (2010-2014), and Chairman of the CIFI, Board of Italian Railway Engineers, (2004-2014).

He has also held numerous international roles, including Vice-Chairman of the UIC, Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer, (2009-2014), Chairman of the UIC European Management Committee (2013-2014), Chairman of the CER, Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies, (2009-2013), and Co-Chairman of the Italian Egyptian Business Council (2012-2014).

Mauro Moretti was born in Rimini, Italy, in 1953 and earned an honors degree in Electrotechnical Engineering from the University of Bologna in 1977.
