ADR chooses Finmeccanica for the new baggage handling system
Over 16,000 bags per hour to 250 destinations: this will be the operating rate of the baggage handling system that will be installed at the new Terminal 1 of the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome, the first Italian airport and eighth in Europe with over 36 million passengers in 2013. Finmeccanica - Selex ES, as a representative of a temporary consortium of companies, has been chosen by Rome Airports (ADR), granting the company a contract worth a total of 52 million Euros, including options. The share of Finmeccanica - Selex ES is 36 million Euros. The work will be completed by 2016.
Designed and developed in Genoa by Finmeccanica - Selex ES, the MBHS (Multisorting Baggage Handling System) is the heart of the plants for the baggage sorting of the Roman hub. According to international security standards and regulations, the system will also incorporate Xray inspection technologies which will be connected together by more than 9 kilometres of conveyor belts.
Finmeccanica – Selex ES previous collaboration with ADR saw the company providing the NET6000 baggage handling system to Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci airport. NET6000 helped to reduce the number of lost or mishandled bags by more than 40% and the hub has since attracted major awards for improving its quality of service. At the same airport Finmeccanica – Selex ES also provided a baggage sorting system at Terminal 5 and modernized the system at boarding area D, the zone reserved for inter-Europe ‘Schengen’ flights. Further international successes followed, with the company providing baggage handling systems at two major French hubs in Grenoble and Paris-Orly.
