Operational Support Systems
Besides the catalogue of products, formed of systems that concern the fight under the surface and systems used in civil sector and essentially connected to the protection of marine and port environments, Defence Systems Division has developed a set of devices for the staff training, the evaluation and test of the products in the catalogue and the measurement of the acoustic emissions of ships and submarines.
The ORACOM system is a multi-tasking simulator, developed for the operating analysis in the underwater war, development and training; it represents a comprehensive system to optimize and evaluate the performances of the arming systems like torpedoes and countermeasures.
It was born in the early 90s thanks to the integration of various simulators that existed at that time, an operation that had not been possible until that date due to the limited calculation capacities available.
The technological evolution allowed creating a powerful instrument capable of studying the behaviour of complex systems like torpedoes and countermeasures in various operating scenarios. In the years, ORACOM has been improved through the integration of new analysis and simulation capacities to follow the development of the arming systems. The use of parametric and real models with software of the various full-scale arming systems allows realistic and in-depth analyses.
The level of definition of the implemented algorithms has allowed using ORACOM to optimize the tactics of all Defence Systems Division torpedoes; and this, thanks to the high capacities of deterministic and statistical simulation of complex scenarios in various operating environments.
ORACOM is used also to plan wet launches of torpedoes and countermeasures with the purpose of validating the excellence of the implemented models.
Gladius is the new commercial name of the Underwater Self-Propelled Target designed to allow the naval units to support the personnel training process with the maximum flexibility and effectiveness.
It is a torpedo-shaped target that navigates underwater and can simulate both a sonar target and a torpedo target with the training purpose of:
- evaluating the performance of the ASW naval sensors;
- evaluating the performance of the attacking torpedoes.
Portable Tracking Range
The PTR system is a portable three-dimensional (3-D) underwater system that is used to test modern underwater weapons in different environmental conditions. It can simultaneously trace three underwater objects in real time both in shallow and deep water analysing their kinematic behaviours.
The PTR is formed by minimum 3, maximum 20 floating buoys, each one connected to an underwater hydrophone. The system traces the trajectory of underwater and surface mobile targets including artificial targets. The buoys are equipped with a radio UHF system and a satellite setting system for the transmission of data between the same buoys and the supporting ship.
The PTR system is used by the Italian Navy to evaluate the launches of Black Shark and MU90.
The Nettuno system (new commercial name of PANOR) is a portable system used to measure and analyse the underwater noise irradiated by surface units and submarines. In fact, the NETTUNO system can characterize the “acoustic signature” of surface units and submarines, thus allowing to evaluate their indiscretion level, in other words the probability of being detected by the sonar systems of enemy platforms. The above acoustic analysis also allows monitoring possible deteriorations of the rotating machines on board for maintenance purposes.
Thanks to its highly innovative system forming acoustic beams, it allows effective operations also in the presence of platform with very low acoustic signature.
