Finmeccanica companies take part in PROTEC 2011 – the Civil and Environmental Protection Technologies and Services Show

Finmeccanica Group companies Alenia Aeronautica, SELEX Elsag, SELEX Galileo and SELEX Sistemi Integrati are taking part in PROTEC 2011, the first Civil and Environmental Protection Technologies and Services Show (Turin, 30 June – 2 July). The companies are exhibiting cutting-edge products, systems and technologies that deliver innovative solutions in the fields of security and the protection of people and the environment.

Alenia Aeronautica is presenting Phase 1 of the Advanced Land Monitoring System (SMAT-F1), a research project based on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for civilian purposes, funded by the Piedmont regional authorities, financially managed by Finpiemonte and promoted by the promotional committee for the Piedmont aerospace cluster. The system will be used to monitor the areas most affected by natural disasters, but will also have additional functions such as emergency communication or, more simply, regional border or traffic control.

SELEX Elsag's contribution to the Show is a presentation on "Radio Communications for Civil Protection". It aims to illustrate the characteristics of, and technical developments in, emergency radio networks created by the company, showing how radio communication for emergency management is a fundamental part of any civil protection system. In Italy, SELEX Elsag has designed and developed numerous mobile radio systems created in dual-mode – i.e. DMR and analog – technology for the national and regional civil protection services, including the one used by the Piedmont regional authority.

SELEX Galileo is presenting a system for training pilots and operators of fire-fighting aircraft; FALCO, an unmanned aircraft forming part of the SMAT programme and intended for medium altitude surveillance; mini and micro UAVs, tiny systems equipped with electro-optical and infrared cameras, designed for local surveillance either in urban or rural settings, and the hyperspectral sensor, an airborne system used for environmental monitoring, pollution prevention and territorial security.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati is exhibiting its National Integrated Civil Protection System (SNIPC), created to support the operations of the Civil Protection Department. SNIPC is an integrated technological system designed to provide operational support and coordination to the Department's vehicles and other resources in the forecasting, prevention and emergency management phases, and, more generally, in the planning, organisation and running of large scale events, aimed at providing an integrated response in the various stages of the civil protection process.
